San Jose, California – Temperatures will plunge into the mid-20s across parts of the Bay Area’s interior overnight, creating a nine-hour window of dangerous cold before sunrise Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday for inland portions of the North Bay, East Bay, Santa Clara Hills, interior Monterey County and San Benito County. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the mid-20s to low-30s in valleys and higher terrain, including the Santa Lucia Mountains and areas near Pinnacles National Park.
Sub-freezing temperatures could damage sensitive crops in the Southern Salinas Valley and Arroyo Seco region, while exposed pets and livestock face hypothermia risk without adequate shelter. Unhoused populations are particularly vulnerable during the pre-dawn hours when temperatures bottom out.
Residents should dress in layers, bring pets indoors and ensure livestock have unfrozen water. Officials warn against using generators or grills indoors due to carbon monoxide danger. Check with local city and county agencies for warming center availability.
Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing after 9 a.m., but additional cold advisories remain possible if clear skies persist into the weekend.
