San Francisco Bay Area, California – Cold to very cold conditions are expected overnight into Friday morning, creating hazardous conditions for vulnerable populations.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey, the cold weather window runs from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday, affecting the Bay Area and Central Coast. Prolonged exposure during this period may lead to hypothermia, particularly for unhoused individuals, pets, and livestock.
Officials also warn that sensitive crops, plants, and vegetation could be damaged or killed if protective measures are not taken. Residents are urged to ensure pets have adequate shelter and unfrozen water, and to check on neighbors who may be more susceptible to cold conditions.
The National Weather Service advises safe heater use and explicitly warns not to use generators or grills indoors, as improper use can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Portable heaters should be checked for proper operation before use.
Cold-related hazards are most likely during the early morning hours when temperatures are at their lowest.
This alert remains in effect through mid-morning Friday, after which conditions are expected to gradually improve.
