Louisiana wakes up inside a gray blur as headlights glow through thick fog across southeast parishes.

Dense fog blankets much of the New Orleans–Baton Rouge corridor early this morning, dropping visibility to one-quarter mile or less in spots. The National Weather Service warns conditions could change quickly, especially near rivers, wetlands, and low-lying roadways.

Drivers navigating I-10, I-12, and elevated causeways should expect sudden visibility drops. Wet pavement and fog mixing with lingering smoke in rural areas add to the hazard. Slow speeds, low-beam headlights, and extra following distance are strongly advised through the morning commute.

The fog advisory remains in effect until late morning, with improvement expected as temperatures rise and mixing increases. Once the fog lifts, skies brighten fast. Sunshine returns by afternoon, pushing highs into the lower 70s, well above normal for late December.

Christmas Day stays mostly quiet. Some patchy fog may redevelop early, but clearing follows quickly. Afternoon temperatures climb into the low 70s, keeping holiday travel smooth across southeast Louisiana and into southern Mississippi.

By Thursday and Friday, the pattern settles into dry and warm conditions. Highs reach the mid-70s, and nights remain mild. Post-Christmas travel on Saturday looks favorable, with sunshine and little weather interference.

Still, meteorologists are watching a late-weekend change. Clouds increase Sunday night, and a cold front approaches early next week. Cooler air follows, dropping temperatures sharply and reintroducing a more seasonal winter feel.

For now, the immediate concern remains visibility. Conditions may improve quickly, but fog can thicken again without warning.

Plan extra time this morning. If traveling early, patience is protection.
