Barre, Vermont – Vermont residents from Barre to Montpelier are being urged to stay indoors as a strong thunderstorm rolls across central Washington and Orange Counties Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a weather alert for the area, warning of wind gusts up to 50 mph, small hail, and the potential for downed trees and power lines along I-89 through 2:15 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, Doppler radar tracked a fast-moving storm over Barre City at 1:30 p.m. moving east at 15 mph. Residents in Barre, Montpelier, and surrounding towns are urged to secure loose objects and avoid unnecessary travel, especially along I-89 between mile markers 44 and 56. Torrential rainfall is also possible, increasing the risk of localized flooding.
Thursday will bring relief with mostly clear skies and a high near 83°F. Dense fog is expected early morning, especially before 8 a.m., so drivers should plan for limited visibility during the commute.
Friday and Saturday look ideal for outdoor plans, with sunny skies and highs in the low to mid-80s. Calm winds will help keep conditions comfortable, but humidity may creep back by Sunday when a 50% chance of afternoon thunderstorms returns.
The next chance for unsettled weather begins Sunday afternoon into Monday, as weak disturbances move through northern New England. Residents planning outdoor events should stay weather-aware.
More weather alerts may be issued later this week depending on Sunday’s storm development. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service.
