Bangor, Maine – A winter storm is expected to move into the Bangor area late Saturday night, bringing a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with hazardous travel conditions developing into Sunday and Monday.
According to the National Weather Service office in Caribou, snow will begin spreading into northern Maine first, while Bangor and areas east and south are expected to see a mix of precipitation. Total snow and sleet accumulations around Bangor are forecast to range from 1 to 3 inches, along with a glaze of ice that could make roads slick.
Farther north of Bangor, including portions of central and northern Maine, snowfall totals are expected to be higher, generally 5 to 8 inches by the time the system exits Monday morning. The heaviest precipitation is forecast overnight Saturday into early Sunday, with lighter precipitation during the day Sunday before intensifying again Sunday evening.
Winter weather advisories have been issued for the entire forecast area due to the combination of snow, ice, and wind. The National Weather Service noted that northwest winds will increase late Sunday night, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow, especially across northern sections.
Blowing snow may continue into Monday afternoon, potentially reducing visibility on open roadways and impacting travel during the Monday morning commute. Motorists are urged to use caution, allow extra time, and check road conditions before traveling.
For students, commuters, and weekend travelers in the Bangor area, conditions may change rapidly overnight and early Sunday, particularly as temperatures fluctuate near freezing.
Officials encourage residents to monitor forecasts and updates through weather.gov/car/winter as the storm progresses and impacts become clearer.
