BANGOR, Maine – A sharp drop in temperatures will bring the first widespread frost of the season to parts of central Maine late Friday night into early Saturday morning. The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Frost Advisory for Southern Penobscot County, including Bangor, Brewer, Old Town, and Orono, in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, overnight lows could fall to around 28 degrees, cold enough to damage or kill unprotected outdoor vegetation. Residents are urged to cover tender plants, bring potted flowers indoors, and disconnect garden hoses to prevent freeze damage.
The cold snap follows a clear, calm evening that will allow heat to escape rapidly after sunset. According to NWS meteorologists, areas outside Bangor’s urban core—especially low-lying rural spots—will see the most intense frost. Gardeners and local farms may face crop damage if precautions aren’t taken.
Drivers may also notice patchy frost on windshields early Saturday before temperatures rebound into the 50s later in the day. The Maine Department of Transportation advises allowing extra time for morning travel to clear frost and notes that bridge decks can cool more quickly than road surfaces.
Temperatures are expected to moderate slightly by Sunday, though another chilly night is possible early next week as clear skies persist over the region.
