Caribou, Maine – A weak frontal system may bring light snow and patchy freezing drizzle across northern Maine, creating slick travel conditions late Tuesday into early Wednesday.
According to the US National Weather Service in Caribou, a coating of light snow is possible across northern communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent and Clayton Lake late Tuesday afternoon into early tonight. Snowfall totals are expected to remain light, generally around a half inch to 1 inch in northern Aroostook County.
Forecasters said lingering low-level moisture behind the system could produce patchy freezing drizzle Tuesday evening, increasing the risk of icy stretches on untreated roads. Drivers along Interstate 95 between Houlton and Millinocket, as well as Route 1 through Aroostook County, may encounter isolated slick spots during the evening commute.
Mainly dry weather with temperatures a few degrees above seasonal averages is expected through midweek.
Looking ahead, low pressure sliding off the Mid-Atlantic coast may bring additional snow to the Bangor region and Downeast Maine Friday night into Saturday. While early projections suggest light accumulations, updated snowfall amounts are expected later this week.
The brief freezing drizzle threat could especially impact early morning commuters and high school students traveling before sunrise Wednesday.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and use caution on untreated roadways.
