Bangor, ME – A significant winter storm could bring more than 6 inches of snow and gusty winds to Downeast Maine Monday into Monday night, potentially impacting travel along Interstate 95 and US Route 1.
According to the US National Weather Service in Caribou, confidence is increasing in accumulating snowfall across much of the region, with the highest totals expected Downeast. Some areas could exceed 8 inches if the storm tracks closer to the coast.
Forecasters say gusty winds may produce blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially near Bangor, Ellsworth, and Bar Harbor. Slick travel conditions are likely during periods of heavier snowfall Monday afternoon through late Monday night.
Northern areas, including Presque Isle and far northern Aroostook County, are expected to see lighter accumulations and fewer impacts compared to coastal and Downeast communities.
The exact track of the offshore low-pressure system remains critical in determining final snowfall totals. A slight shift east or west could significantly change amounts and wind impacts.
Travel along I-95 between Augusta and Bangor, as well as US-1 along the coast, may become hazardous during peak snowfall.
Monday evening commuters and overnight freight traffic could encounter snow-covered roads and blowing snow, particularly in open coastal stretches.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as additional details on snowfall totals and wind speeds become clearer.
Further advisories or warnings may be issued as the storm approaches.
