Bangor, Maine – Snow will begin coating roads across the Bangor region by 8 p.m. Tuesday, creating slick travel on I-95, I-395 and Route 1 during the evening commute and into the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, snow develops this evening across central and Downeast Maine, with the steadiest snowfall expected between 8 p.m. and midnight. Most of the Bangor region, including Brewer, Orono and Ellsworth, can expect 2 to 4 inches by early Wednesday morning. Coastal Hancock and Washington counties, including Bar Harbor, Machias and Eastport, could see totals closer to 3 to 4 inches.

Farther inland toward Greenville, Millinocket and Lee, snowfall amounts will generally range from 1 to 3 inches. Roads across Penobscot and Hancock counties will turn snow-covered quickly after onset, especially on untreated secondary routes and elevated surfaces. Visibility may drop below one mile during heavier bursts, particularly along Route 9 and Route 1 Downeast.

Drivers should plan for reduced speeds and allow extra stopping distance Tuesday night. Maine DOT crews are expected to treat major corridors, but snow rates could briefly outpace clearing operations. Keep headlights on, clear snow from vehicle roofs and charge mobile devices before travel.

Temperatures rise above freezing Wednesday afternoon, helping melt accumulated snow and improving road conditions. Another round of light snow may brush northern Aroostook County late Wednesday night into early Thursday. Milder air arrives this weekend with a mix changing to rain Saturday. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall rates increase Tuesday evening.
