Bangor, Maine – Light snow of 1 to 3 inches is expected this afternoon into tonight, creating slushy and slippery travel along I-95 and US-1 before a surge of Arctic air arrives this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a weak frontal system will move across northern and Downeast Maine on Wednesday, bringing periods of light snow during the afternoon and evening commute.

Snow totals are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches across much of Aroostook County, including Caribou and Presque Isle. Areas around Bangor, Ellsworth and coastal Hancock County could see 2 to 3 inches. Localized higher totals are possible in parts of central Maine.

Forecasters said road surfaces may become slushy and slick, particularly on untreated secondary roads and elevated surfaces. Visibility could briefly drop during steadier snow showers late Wednesday.

High temperatures Wednesday will range from the mid-20s north to the mid-30s Downeast. Conditions turn quieter Thursday, with highs in the low 30s north to upper 30s south.

A stronger cold front approaches Saturday, bringing gusty south winds ahead of the system along with scattered rain and snow showers. Behind the front, a new surge of Arctic air is expected Saturday night into Sunday.

Wind chills Sunday night into Monday morning could fall below zero across much of northern Maine, with some locations in Aroostook County potentially seeing wind chills between 10 and 25 degrees below zero.

Commuters, school transportation services and delivery drivers along Interstate 95 and Route 1 should prepare for changing road conditions this afternoon and significantly colder air by early next week.
