Bangor, ME – A powerful Nor’easter is bringing blizzard conditions to Downeast Maine today, with the most dangerous travel expected along I-95, US-1 and Route 9 from Tuesday afternoon into the overnight hours.

The National Weather Service in Caribou reports strong winds, heavy snow and widespread blowing snow will create whiteout conditions, especially along the Downeast coast. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph along coastal Washington County, including Eastport, Machias and Calais. Inland areas such as Bangor and Ellsworth may see gusts closer to 50 mph.

Snowfall totals will vary across the region. Up to 12 inches are possible across Downeast communities, with the highest amounts likely in southeastern Washington County. Bangor and interior Hancock County could see 6 to 8 inches, while totals taper off farther north toward Presque Isle and Fort Kent.

The worst conditions are expected this afternoon and evening when heavy snowfall rates combine with peak wind gusts. Travel along I-95 south of Bangor, as well as US-1 along the coast, may become nearly impossible at times due to blowing and drifting snow. Secondary roads could quickly become snow-covered and impassable.

Blowing snow will remain a concern even after snowfall intensity decreases late tonight. Officials strongly advise avoiding non-essential travel during peak storm hours. Power outages are also possible due to strong winds and heavy, wet snow weighing down trees and lines.

Residents should secure outdoor items, prepare emergency kits and closely monitor updates from local authorities as conditions rapidly deteriorate across Downeast Maine.
