Bangor, ME – Roads across central and DownEast Maine are turning slick early Friday as freezing rain and sleet create icy conditions that could disrupt travel through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday for Bangor, Ellsworth, and coastal communities, with a light glaze of ice expected on roads and bridges. Further inland, including Millinocket, Houlton, and Greenville, the advisory continues until 2 p.m., with up to a quarter inch of ice and as much as a half inch of sleet possible .

Routes such as I-95 through Bangor and U.S. Route 1 along the coast may become slick, especially on untreated surfaces and elevated roadways. In rural and wooded areas, ice accumulation could weigh down tree limbs, increasing the risk of minor outages.

The Friday morning commute is expected to see the worst conditions, though hazards may linger into early afternoon in northern areas.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and check New England 511 for updates. Conditions will gradually improve later Friday, but additional advisories could be issued if icing persists.
