BANGOR, Maine – Residents across central and Downeast Maine should brace for a major early December snowstorm beginning Tuesday morning, with heavy snow and strong winds expected to make travel difficult through Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of eastern Maine, including Bangor, Bar Harbor, Calais, and Dover-Foxcroft.

According to the National Weather Service, between 5 and 10 inches of snow could fall across the region, with the heaviest accumulation likely Tuesday night. North winds gusting up to 30 mph may lead to patchy blowing snow, reducing visibility and worsening road conditions during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.

Drivers should plan for hazardous travel and consider delaying non-essential trips. Plow crews are expected to be active through Tuesday night as temperatures drop below freezing. Power outages are possible where wet, heavy snow combines with gusty winds.

Snow is forecast to taper off by Wednesday morning, but additional advisories could follow if the storm intensifies.
