Baltimore, Maryland – Drivers across Maryland and much of the Mid-Atlantic could see travel conditions deteriorate Wednesday evening as a new weather system moves in, bringing rain that transitions to snow overnight. The changeover is expected as temperatures fall below freezing, increasing the risk for slick roads and untreated surfaces by early Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, light to moderate precipitation spreads across the region Wednesday evening and continues into Thursday morning. Most areas are expected to see rainfall first, followed by snow as colder air settles in overnight. While precipitation amounts remain modest, the timing during the overnight hours raises concerns for refreezing on roadways.

Across Maryland, drivers in Baltimore, Frederick, and along the I-95 and I-83 corridors should be prepared for slippery conditions late Wednesday night into the Thursday morning commute. Similar impacts are expected in southern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and northern Virginia, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads. Officials advise allowing extra travel time and avoiding unnecessary overnight driving if possible.

River levels across the Mid-Atlantic are expected to remain stable, with no significant rises anticipated despite the precipitation.

Colder conditions linger into Thursday morning, and additional advisories may be issued as the system moves through. Travelers are urged to stay alert for changing road conditions through early Thursday.
