Washington, DC – Strong wind gusts up to 35 mph are already impacting the region this morning, and a sharp overnight temperature drop could lead to freezing conditions by sunrise Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, northwest winds will increase to 10 to 15 mph with gusts between 25 and 35 mph through the afternoon, while highs reach only 50°F to 59°F in urban areas and as low as the upper 30s to mid-40s in the mountains. These gusts could affect travel on major routes like I-95, I-495, and I-66, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Skies remain mostly sunny today across Washington, Baltimore, and northern Virginia, but conditions shift quickly tonight as winds diminish and temperatures fall into the upper 20s to low 30s by 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday.

This setup supports a widespread freeze, especially west of I-95, with frost likely even in urban areas. Sensitive plants and early-season vegetation are at risk.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items today and take steps to protect plants overnight. Temperatures remain cool Wednesday before a gradual warmup begins Thursday, though additional chilly nights may follow.
