Maryland wakes to quiet streets, cool air, and a January calm that will not last long.
Skies stay mostly clear early, but a fast-changing winter pattern is lining up just ahead. Meteorologists are tracking a storm system set to impact travel and daily plans into the weekend.

Temperatures rise into the low 50s today, offering a brief break from colder winter air. Roads stay dry, and travel remains smooth through much of the day. Clouds increase later, signaling the next shift. By Friday afternoon, rain chances begin to climb across Baltimore, Washington, and surrounding suburbs.

Rain becomes more likely Friday evening and continues overnight. Pavement turns slick during busy travel hours, especially along I-95, I-83, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and I-495. Visibility may drop at times as steadier rain develops.

Saturday brings the most impactful weather. Periods of rain persist through much of the day, with highs near 60 degrees. While snow is not expected, winter hazards still matter. Standing water, fog, and reduced visibility slow traffic and increase crash risk across the region.

Saturday night marks a turning point. Colder air begins filtering in as rain tapers. By Sunday, showers become more scattered, and temperatures trend downward. Highs fall back near the low 50s, with drying conditions later in the day.

Sunday night brings renewed concern. Skies partially clear, winds ease, and temperatures drop near freezing. Any leftover moisture may refreeze, creating black ice on bridges, ramps, sidewalks, and untreated roads. Flash freezing is possible after sunset.

Looking ahead, next week turns colder but quieter. Sunshine returns Monday with highs near the low 40s. Mornings feel brisk, though daylight continues to increase by late January across Maryland and the District.

Plan ahead: allow extra travel time Friday and Saturday, then slow down late Sunday when freezing risks increase.
