Washington, D.C. – A brutal wave of heat and humidity is set to engulf the D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia region starting Sunday, with heat indices soaring as high as 110°F through Wednesday, raising health concerns for millions.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, daytime highs will surge into the upper 90s beginning Sunday, with oppressive humidity driving heat indices between 100–110°F each afternoon. The hottest stretch will run from Sunday, June 22, through Wednesday, June 25. Lows will offer little relief, remaining in the upper 60s and low 70s across the region.

In Washington and the I-95 corridor, Monday and Tuesday could bring peak heat indices above 105°F, especially during the afternoon commute. Baltimore is expected to see highs near 100°F by midweek, while Loudoun, Fairfax, and Prince George’s counties may experience similar extremes. Mountain areas will be slightly cooler, but still muggy.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers may open across D.C. and Maryland if the heat risk escalates. Power grid strain is possible with increased A/C demand.

Heat advisories remain possible through midweek. Another update is expected by Sunday morning.
