Baltimore County, MD – Flags across Baltimore County are flying at half-staff today as officials and residents honor a veteran police detective who died following a medical emergency while on duty.

According to the Baltimore County Police Department, County Executive Kathy Klausmeier ordered all county flags lowered in remembrance of Detective Paul Hoke, a 30-year department veteran who passed away Thursday, January 2, following an on-duty medical emergency earlier this week.

The department said Detective Hoke experienced the emergency while working on Tuesday, December 31, 2025. He was transported for medical care but later died, becoming the 11th Baltimore County police officer to die in the line of duty.

In addition to flags being lowered outside all county agencies, officials confirmed that bunting has been placed in front of the Baltimore County Public Safety Building at 700 East Joppa Road. Detective Hoke’s assigned detective vehicle and a post card from Precinct 6–Towson are also draped in bunting as a public show of mourning.

Detective Hoke began his career with the Baltimore County Police Department as a cadet in December 1995. Over three decades, he served residents across Baltimore County, which neighbors Baltimore City and is part of the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.

Police officials described Hoke as a dedicated public servant whose long career reflected his commitment to community safety and service.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been released. The department said details will be announced once finalized and in coordination with Detective Hoke’s family.

Residents wishing to pay respects are encouraged to monitor official Baltimore County Police channels for updates.
