Towson, MD – Drivers in Baltimore County will face new, stricter fines for speeding in school zones beginning Tuesday, October 1.
According to the Baltimore County Police Department, a tiered penalty system is being introduced to discourage unsafe driving near schools. Fines will now range from $40 for driving 12–15 mph over the limit to $425 for exceeding the limit by 40 mph or more.
The updated penalties are as follows:
- 12–15 mph over: $40
- 16–19 mph over: $70
- 20–29 mph over: $120
- 30–39 mph over: $230
- 40+ mph over: $425
Police said the changes are designed to enhance student safety and reduce crashes in high-risk areas. “Slow down, protect kids, and your wallet,” the department posted in a community alert.
School zones across Baltimore County are heavily monitored during drop-off and pick-up hours. Officers say drivers can expect active enforcement as the new fines take effect.
Authorities are reminding motorists that school zone speed limits are not only a legal requirement but also a community responsibility.
