Port Huron, Michigan — Lake effect snow showers are impacting portions of Michigan’s eastern Thumb region today, bringing localized snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac.

The most persistent snow showers are expected near Lake Huron, where cold northwest winds continue to generate narrow bands of lake effect snow. While many inland areas will only see isolated snow showers or flurries, communities closer to the shoreline may experience brief periods of reduced visibility and slick road conditions.

Travel impacts will be most noticeable along roadways such as M-25, US-53, M-19, and portions of I-69, especially during heavier snow bursts. Accumulations will vary significantly over short distances, with some areas picking up only a dusting while others see several inches.

As temperatures fall tonight into Sunday morning, lows are expected to drop into the -10°F to +5°F range, allowing untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses to become icy. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra stopping distance, particularly in open rural areas where blowing snow may briefly reduce visibility.

Conditions improve on Sunday, as sunshine returns and temperatures climb into the low to mid-20s. Despite the sunshine, cold air will remain in place, and high temperatures in the 20s are expected to persist into next week.

Another chance for light snow showers arrives Monday, though widespread accumulations are not anticipated. Tuesday looks quieter with partly sunny skies and continued cold.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert for changing conditions today, especially if traveling within the eastern Thumb. Even minor snowfall amounts can quickly lead to hazardous driving when combined with cold temperatures.

For the latest updates, motorists should monitor local forecasts and road conditions before heading out.
