Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh will host a “Back to School Blast Off!” event tomorrow Aug. 16 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at Mill 19 at 4501 Lytle St.

JADA House International and Hazelwood Cafe will provide free backpacks, haircuts, food, and school supplies. This event will also feature kid-friendly activities, resource tables, and more. Adult participants can enjoy performances by DJ Selecta, the Thomas Wendt Trio Jazz Band, and inspirational speaker Devontae Butler.

Pittsburgh Public Schools will hold its annual back-to-school event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the FedEx Great Hall at Acrisure Stadium. A drive-thru option will be available at Gold Lot 1A. Free supplies will be distributed while they last.

This year marks the 13th anniversary of Pittsburgh’s largest back-to-school tradition.

“Getting prepared for school can be really challenging, especially for parents who have less money and time with their children,” said one parent. “Events like these help get kids excited about returning to school and ensure they have what they need to succeed.”

The Pittsburgh Department of Public Works encourages guardians and teachers to donate gently used school clothes to organizations such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Soles4Souls, St. Vincent de Paul, Planet Aid, and East End Community Thrift.

Traffic delays, especially during peak hours, are to be expected with students returning to school. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges motorists to slow down in school zones to ensure safety.
