Reno, NV — The Sierra Avalanche Center has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Watch for the Greater Lake Tahoe area. The warning remains in effect until 5:15 a.m. Saturday.
Heavy snowfall and strong winds have created unstable snowpack, increasing the likelihood of avalanches. According to the National Weather Service in Reno, these conditions pose a high risk, especially in backcountry areas. Avalanche experts urge residents and visitors to avoid avalanche-prone terrain, citing widespread instability in snow layers.
Travel in affected areas, including popular recreation zones, is strongly discouraged. Avalanches can travel long distances and impact forests, valley floors, and flat terrain.
The alert, which began Friday at 8:15 a.m., aims to protect outdoor enthusiasts from potentially life-threatening conditions. Backcountry travelers should check weather and avalanche forecasts before heading out and carry proper safety equipment, including beacons and shovels.
