Austin, Texas – Central Texas is seeing a break from the late-summer heat Sunday as scattered showers and thunderstorms keep temperatures well below average, but the relief will be short-lived. Heavy downpours could trigger localized flooding through Monday before skies dry out and temperatures climb back into the mid and upper 90s later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, highs Sunday and Monday will run 5 to 11 degrees cooler than normal, topping out near the upper 80s in Austin and San Antonio. Rocksprings, Kerrville, and Fredericksburg are expected to remain in the 70s and low 80s, thanks to the thick cloud cover and widespread showers. Rain chances are highest across the Rio Grande Plains, where Eagle Pass and Del Rio face a 35–40% chance of storms Sunday.
Roadways may see ponding during heavier bursts of rain, particularly along I-35 between San Antonio and Austin, and in low-lying Hill Country crossings. Drivers are urged to slow down during downpours and avoid water-covered roads.
By Tuesday, drier air moves in, with highs steadily climbing toward the upper 90s by Thursday and Friday across most of Central Texas. Only a slim chance of isolated showers lingers into next weekend, mainly near the Coastal Plains and Rio Grande.
