Austin, Texas – Much colder air is settling into Central Texas tonight, bringing a light freeze north of the Austin metro as temperatures dip into the low to mid-30s by daybreak Tuesday.

Evening clouds and breezy conditions will gradually diminish overnight, allowing temperatures to fall quickly. Lows are expected to reach around 33 degrees in Austin, with colder readings farther north. Llano may drop to around 29 degrees, Georgetown near 33, and Fredericksburg close to 36. According to the National Weather Service Austin–San Antonio office, the best chance for a brief freeze will be in northern Hill Country communities, where winds relax after midnight and skies partially clear.

Most of the I-35 corridor, including downtown Austin and San Antonio, is expected to stay just above freezing. However, patchy frost cannot be ruled out on elevated or sheltered surfaces, especially north and west of the metro. Sensitive plants, pets, and exposed pipes should be protected where temperatures approach freezing, particularly in Llano, Burnet, and northern Williamson counties.

Travel impacts are expected to be minimal, but drivers in colder rural areas should remain alert for isolated slick spots on bridges early Tuesday morning. According to the National Weather Service, the cold will be short-lived. Sunshine returns Tuesday, and temperatures rebound steadily through midweek.

By late week, highs are expected to surge back into the 70s and even low 80s across Central Texas, ending this brief taste of winter. Residents are encouraged to take simple cold-weather precautions tonight, then prepare for a rapid shift back to springlike warmth.
