Austin, Texas – Drivers along I-35 should prepare for summerlike heat by 4 p.m. Tuesday as temperatures surge toward 90 degrees across Central Texas, creating unusually warm conditions for early March before rain chances build later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, morning clouds will give way to sunshine Tuesday afternoon, sending highs into the upper 80s for Austin, San Marcos and New Braunfels. Some communities west of I-35, including areas near Del Rio and Eagle Pass, may briefly touch 90 degrees.

The warmth will persist through midweek, with highs ranging from the upper 70s to upper 80s Wednesday and Thursday. South winds will keep conditions breezy at times, especially along I-35 and US-183 during the afternoon commute.

Rain chances begin increasing Thursday, with scattered showers developing across the Hill Country and gradually expanding east. By Friday afternoon and evening, rain probabilities climb to 30 to 40 percent in the Austin metro, with isolated thunderstorms possible. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, brief heavy downpours could reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways, particularly along Loop 1 and I-10 corridors.

The weekend trends slightly cooler but remains mild, with additional scattered rain chances lingering into Saturday. Drivers should stay alert for changing conditions late week, secure outdoor items in breezy conditions and allow extra travel time during heavier showers.

Additional updates are expected as rain coverage and timing become clearer heading into Friday.
