Austin, TX – Sunshine will dominate the sky across Austin today, but temperatures will remain unseasonably cold, with afternoon highs only reaching the 30s and 40s, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service Austin–San Antonio said most of the region will climb just above freezing this afternoon, while some Hill Country locations may remain at or below 32 degrees throughout the day. Despite clear skies, lingering cold air will keep conditions chilly from morning through evening.
Forecasters noted that northerly winds will persist, though wind speeds are expected to gradually diminish from late afternoon into the evening. The combination of cold temperatures and lingering breeze may make it feel colder than thermometer readings suggest, especially during the morning hours.
A gradual warming trend is expected to begin midweek, allowing daytime highs to recover into more seasonable territory. However, the National Weather Service cautioned that another cold front is forecast to arrive Friday, bringing low rain chances, mainly across eastern and southeastern portions of Central Texas, followed by another shot of cooler air. This next cold push is expected to be weaker than the current one.
Commuters, students, and outdoor workers in Austin should dress in layers today, particularly during early morning and late evening hours when temperatures will be coldest. While no winter precipitation is expected, cold-sensitive plants, pets, and exposed pipes may still need protection during the overnight hours.
The National Weather Service will continue to refine details on the late-week front and any rainfall potential as forecast confidence increases.
