Austin, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding Texans to store firearms safely in their vehicles as part of the agency’s ongoing 90 Days of Safety campaign. Officials say parked cars are now the most common source of stolen guns across the state.

According to DPS, drivers should always keep firearms locked, out of sight, and secured with a cable or vehicle mount to help prevent theft. Ammunition should also be stored separately and kept locked away.

DPS is working with the Austin Police Department, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, and the County Attorney’s Office to address a rise in vehicle burglaries and related property crimes in city parks and neighborhoods.

“Every Texan can help by practicing safe gun storage in their vehicle,” DPS officials said, noting that responsible storage can prevent firearms from falling into the hands of criminals.
