Austin, Texas – Gusty winds and temperatures pushing into the low 90s are increasing fire danger across Central Texas Thursday, with dry conditions expected to hold through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, afternoon highs will range from 88°F to 94°F across the region, with the I-35 corridor, including Austin and San Antonio, reaching near 91°F. Breezy conditions combined with low humidity are creating elevated fire weather concerns, especially during peak heating hours between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Communities from Georgetown to New Braunfels and San Marcos face an increased risk of grass fires, particularly along open fields and roadways like I-35 and Highway 290 where dry vegetation can ignite quickly. In the Hill Country, including Fredericksburg and Kerrville, slightly cooler highs in the mid to upper 80s will still support fire spread due to continued dry air.

No rainfall is expected through the end of the month, allowing fuels to remain dry and receptive to ignition. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could produce sparks, including parking on dry grass or using equipment during the hottest part of the day.

Temperatures briefly dip Saturday before rebounding into the upper 80s and 90s early next week, with fire weather concerns likely to persist. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
