Austin, Texas – A quick temperature drop is setting up a cold night across Central Texas, raising concerns for early-morning travel along major roadways from Austin to San Antonio as readings fall into the upper 20s and 30s by daybreak.

According to the National Weather Service office serving Austin and San Antonio, gusty winds will diminish after sunset, allowing dry air to take hold and temperatures to fall rapidly overnight. Morning lows are expected to reach the upper 20s to low 30s north and west of Austin, with mid-30s common along the I-35 corridor and upper 30s closer to San Antonio. Light northerly winds will continue through the night.

While no widespread ice is expected, bridges and elevated surfaces could become slick in colder pockets, especially along I-35, US-183, Loop 1, and Highway 290 near Austin, as well as elevated ramps near downtown San Antonio. Commuters heading out before sunrise should slow down and remain alert for isolated slick spots.

Thursday will bring sunshine and calmer conditions, but cooler air will linger, keeping daytime highs in the mid-50s to low 60s. Even colder air is expected to arrive this weekend, which could prompt additional cold-weather advisories.
