Austin, Texas – A cold front is moving through the Austin–San Antonio region midday Friday, bringing breezy conditions, falling temperatures, and a sharp cool-down heading into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters said north winds gusting up to 30 mph are expected behind the front this afternoon, with elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions possible in parts of Central Texas. Despite the cooler air, skies are expected to remain mostly sunny.
High temperatures today will range from the upper 60s to mid-70s, but temperatures will drop steadily tonight. By Saturday and Sunday mornings, lows are forecast to fall into the 30s, with a potential freeze Sunday morning in some locations, especially outside urban cores.
The National Weather Service indicated that colder-than-normal temperatures are likely to persist into early next week before a gradual warm-up begins. Rain chances are expected to return by Tuesday into Wednesday, with precipitation probabilities increasing into the 20–40% range across the region.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items due to gusty winds, use caution with outdoor burning, and prepare for freezing temperatures later this weekend. Early-morning commuters and outdoor workers should plan for much colder conditions compared to recent days.
No winter precipitation is currently forecast with this system, but the temperature drop may be significant for sensitive plants, pets, and exposed plumbing.
