San Antonio, TX – After a stretch of unseasonably warm weather with near-record highs, a sharp cold front will sweep through Central Texas late tonight, bringing strong winds, sharply colder air, and potential freeze conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Austin/San Antonio.
Forecasters expect gusty north winds up to 40 mph on Sunday, especially across the Hill Country and I-35 corridor. “Windy and dry weather Sunday can cause fires to spread quickly,” the NWS cautioned, urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose outdoor items.
Temperatures will fall dramatically behind the front, with highs Sunday only in the 60s and lows dipping into the 30s and low 40s by Monday morning. Parts of the Hill Country, including Fredericksburg, Kerrville, and Llano, could see freezing temperatures Sunday and Monday nights, with wind chills in the 20s.
The NWS says winds will gradually weaken Monday, but below-average temperatures will persist through Tuesday before a warmup returns midweek. No rain is expected during this period.
Residents are encouraged to protect sensitive plants, outdoor pets, and exposed pipes ahead of the cold snap.
