Aurora, IL – Aurora police say multiple firearms and drugs were recovered during a traffic stop late last week in Montgomery, resulting in several charges against passengers.

According to the Aurora Police Department, investigators with the Special Operations Group stopped a 2022 Nissan Sentra near Route 30 and Route 31 at about 10:57 p.m. Friday. Five people were inside the vehicle, which officers said had committed multiple traffic violations.

Police reported finding a loaded handgun in the backpack of a 17-year-old male passenger, another loaded firearm in the waistband of a 16-year-old passenger, and a third loaded gun under the front driver’s seat. Officers said none of the occupants had a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card or Concealed Carry License.

Authorities also said a 21-year-old male passenger was allegedly in possession of cocaine, and a 19-year-old male passenger was arrested on an active warrant. Both men were identified by police as documented gang members.

In total, three loaded firearms, ammunition, and more than three grams of suspected narcotics were recovered, with two of the guns confirmed stolen out of Texas. Police said the vehicle was towed and impounded.

Following a review by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, the 17-year-old and 16-year-old passengers were charged with possession of a firearm without a valid FOID and three counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. They were taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.

Aurora Police Chief Matthew Thomas said in a statement the situation could have escalated quickly and credited officers for removing the weapons from the street.

The investigation is ongoing, with additional charges possible, police said.
