Aurora, Ill. — On June 24, Aurora Mayor John Laesch released a statement on concerns over flag raising in the City of Aurora. The statement follows controversy concerning the new city flag raising policy.
The statement explained the change in flag policy made by Laesch this year. He noted how he has chosen to make flag raisings “community-led celebrations” rather than be strictly ceremonial. Laesch reaffirmed his commitment to “substance over symbolism” that was made during his campaign. Laesch also explained that previous flag raising ceremonies were at the cost of taxpayer funds. The mayor said he wants to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars.
The Wednesday evening before Juneteenth, a flag for the holiday was raised by two members of the Central Services staff. The mayor explained that no format event had been scheduled but apologized for not “personally” notifying those who had participated in the event in the past.
“I’m making those calls now,” the mayor said, “not just to apologize, but to listen and learn.”
“Moving forward, we will continue to welcome community groups who want to waive flags in front of City Hall to notify us in advance,” Laesch said. “We will work together to make sure these moments are grounded in collaboration, not confusion.”
