Aurora, IL – Firefighters rescued several trapped residents Saturday morning after a two-alarm house fire broke out on Prairie Street, according to the Aurora Fire Department.

The blaze began around 8:29 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, in the 200 block of Prairie Street, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Dispatchers received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting people trapped inside a burning two-and-a-half-story home as smoke poured from the structure.

According to fire officials, the incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, bringing 26 personnel to the scene, including four engine companies, two truck companies, and three medic units.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and visible flames from the basement upon arrival. Several individuals were trapped on the second floor, with one person jumping into the arms of an Aurora police officer before firefighters could place ladders. Crews then rescued another person using a ground ladder on the home’s side.

Two civilians and one police officer were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The home sustained extensive damage and was deemed uninhabitable. Firefighters remained on-site for several hours conducting salvage and ventilation operations while assisting the family with personal belongings.

“This was a fast-moving fire that could have ended much differently,” said Aurora Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickell. “Thanks to the quick actions of police officers and firefighters, everyone made it out safely.”

Officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Aurora Fire Department reminded residents to test smoke alarms regularly, plan escape routes, and stay alert to fire risks during the winter season.
