Aurora, IL – A fast-moving fire tore through a three-story multi-unit building late Thursday morning in Aurora, prompting a large response from the Aurora Fire Department.
According to officials, crews were dispatched around 10:38 a.m. to the 400 block of West Downer Place after reports of smoke and flames coming from the roof of a building undergoing renovations. Firefighters quickly upgraded the call as conditions worsened, sending four engine companies, two truck companies, two medic units, and five chief officers—a total of 25 personnel—to the scene.
Crews advanced multiple hose lines inside and up to the roof, using ladders to reach and extinguish hidden flames. The fire was contained within 30 minutes, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes.
One occupant, a 26-year-old man living in the building during renovations, escaped unharmed but was later assisted by family after the home was declared uninhabitable. One firefighter suffered a minor injury and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. No other injuries were reported.
“This was a fast-moving fire with challenging access conditions, but our crews worked quickly to stop it from spreading,” said Aurora Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel. “Their coordinated response helped protect both the structure and the surrounding neighborhood.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Aurora Fire Department at (630) 256-4000.
