Aurora, Illinois – Police are investigating a reported gunfire incident near High Street and Superior Street that prompted a brief school security alert Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Aurora Police Department, an officer in the area heard gunshots around 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, and immediately began investigating. Officers secured the scene and located a 23-year-old man whose involvement remains under investigation.

The individual was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Police confirmed no one was struck by gunfire and no injuries were reported.

During a search of the surrounding area, officers recovered a firearm and additional items considered evidentiary. Nearby schools were placed on “secure and teach” status out of what Police Chief Matt Thomas described as “an abundance of caution.” The status was lifted once officers confirmed there was no ongoing threat.

“We understand that reports of gunfire are concerning, particularly when schools are nearby,” Thomas said in a statement. “Our officers responded quickly to secure the area and ensure everyone’s safety.”

The investigation remains active. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at 630-256-5500.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000 or online at p3tips.com/135. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to felony arrests.

The brief school security status may have impacted students and afternoon pickup schedules in the area.
