Aurora, IL – Free speech and protest rights took center stage Sunday during a “Know Your Rights” event hosted at the Eola Community Center in Aurora. The free, two-hour forum was organized by ACLU-Illinois, Batavia-Aurora Area Indivisible, and Indivisible Illinois, drawing community members interested in learning how to safely and effectively exercise their First Amendment rights.

The event featured a panel discussion with Kevin Fee, ACLU-Illinois legal director; Luis Gomez, ACLU; and activist Qasim Rasid, moderated by Sharon Riggle of Batavia-Aurora Indivisible. Following the panel, Hirsh M. Joshi, staff attorney for ACLU-Illinois, led an in-depth presentation on free speech protections, protest rights, and strategies for engaging with law enforcement.

Joshi warned that “loud and activated groups are attempting to limit First Amendment rights and silence marginalized voices,” urging attendees to speak up when free expression is threatened. He outlined practical steps residents can take—such as attending public meetings, writing letters to the editor, and inviting others to take peaceful action—to protect their rights.

Riggle also announced an upcoming demonstration set for Saturday, Nov. 15, from noon to 2 p.m. outside the Batavia Public Library, advocating for immigration rights, healthcare, and food security.

Attendees received printed materials, whistles for ICE raid alerts, and refreshments. For more information about future events or ACLU’s Community Activator Program, visit aclu-il.org or email events@aclu-il.org.
