Aurora, IL – Fire crews battled a second-alarm structure fire early Sunday morning on the city’s near west side, leaving a home uninhabitable and displacing two residents, officials said.

According to the Aurora Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched around 2:14 a.m. Sunday to a reported structure fire in the 600 block of West Downer Place. The initial response was upgraded from a box alarm to a second alarm after crews arrived and observed heavy fire conditions.

Officials said 29 personnel responded, including four engine companies, three truck companies, three medic units, and two chief officers. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire on the rear of a large, three-story, single-family wood-frame residence.

Crews launched an aggressive interior attack while additional companies worked to secure a primary search and establish backup fire lines. Firefighting efforts were complicated by cold temperatures, strong winds, and the size and layout of the home, according to the department. The residence was also heavily congested with contents, making navigation and fire control more difficult.

Firefighters remained on scene for several hours to fully extinguish the blaze and complete extensive overhaul operations.

One civilian sustained minor injuries and was transported for medical evaluation. A firefighter was treated at the scene and did not require hospital transport. Due to significant damage, the home was deemed uninhabitable, and two adult residents were displaced. Officials said they are temporarily staying with a neighbor.

“This incident highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms and an evacuation plan in place,” said Aurora Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel, noting that crews worked quickly to contain the fire and protect occupants and firefighters.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Aurora Fire Department investigators. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at (630) 256-4000.
