Aurora, IL – Aurora firefighters contained an attic fire Sunday afternoon that left a North Union Street home uninhabitable but caused no injuries, according to officials.

According to the Aurora Fire Department, crews responded at approximately 12:35 p.m. on September 28 to a structure fire in the 100 block of North Union Street. A total of 29 personnel, including three engine companies, two truck companies, three medic units, and three chief officers, were dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the attic and roof of a 2½-story single-family home. The blaze was traced to a vent in the kitchen area before spreading vertically into the second floor and attic. Crews advanced hose lines, ventilated the roof, and conducted searches while police had already alerted and evacuated the sole resident, a 50-year-old man.

During search operations, firefighters also located two pet birds and reunited them safely with family members. Despite containment efforts, officials said the home sustained significant fire damage and was deemed uninhabitable. Aurora’s Victim Services unit was called to assist the displaced resident.

Aurora Fire Chief David McCabe credited quick action for preventing further spread: “Our crews did an excellent job of stopping this fire before it could fully take hold of the attic.”

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
