Aurora, IL – Aurora drivers faced increased enforcement this holiday season as police targeted impaired driving and seat belt violations during a statewide traffic safety campaign that wrapped up Monday.

According to the Aurora Police Department, officers partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation and law enforcement agencies across the state as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” initiatives, which ran from December 12 through Monday, January 5.

Police said the enforcement effort focused on removing impaired drivers from Aurora roads while also encouraging safer driving behaviors, particularly seat belt use, during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

During the campaign, Aurora officers conducted 36 traffic stops, resulting in 47 citations and four arrests. Citations included 17 seat belt and other occupant protection violations, four impaired driving violations, four speeding violations, and 10 additional traffic offenses. Officers also issued two warnings.

Authorities confirmed arrests included three drivers cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license and one DUI arrest.

“Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in a crash,” Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas said. “Bucking up is not optional — it’s the law.”

Police noted that targeted enforcement took place on neighborhood streets and major roadways throughout Aurora in an effort to prevent crashes and reduce injuries during the holiday travel season.

The campaign was administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and funded through federal highway safety grants managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is part of Illinois’ ongoing “It’s Not a Game” traffic safety initiative.

Aurora police say similar enforcement efforts will continue throughout the year.
