Aurora, IL – Firefighters rescued a woman trapped inside a second-floor apartment during a fast-moving fire on New Year’s Day, Thursday, after crews were dispatched to a reported stove fire on the city’s west side.
According to the Aurora Fire Department, units were called to the 300 block of Coventry Court at approximately 4:55 p.m. Initial 9-1-1 calls reported a stove fire, but additional callers soon warned of visible smoke and a possible occupant still inside the residence. The response was quickly upgraded to a second alarm as crews rushed to the scene.
Firefighters arriving first reported heavy smoke coming from the eaves of a two-story, eight-unit apartment building. One crew located a woman trapped inside a second-floor unit and used a ladder to access a window, make entry, and carry her to safety.
Paramedics treated the woman at the scene before transporting her to a local hospital for further evaluation. Her condition was not released.
Crews encountered challenges due to a frozen fire hydrant, but officials said firefighters were able to establish an alternate water supply and bring the fire under control. The blaze was contained to the apartment where it started, though a neighboring unit suffered water damage.
Both affected apartments were deemed temporarily uninhabitable, while the rest of the building remained intact. A dog inside the fire-involved unit was also rescued and safely returned to family members.
“This was a fast-moving incident with a confirmed victim, and our crews acted quickly to get her out and contain the fire,” said Aurora Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Aurora Fire Department investigators.
