Augusta, ME – A winter storm is set to impact Maine from tonight through Monday, bringing a mix of snow, rain, and gusty winds across the state. Northern Maine is expected to see the highest snowfall totals, while areas south of Katahdin will likely experience mostly rain.

According to the US National Weather Service Caribou, precipitation will begin tonight as snow in most regions. As warmer air pushes northward Sunday, snow is expected to change over to rain from south to north. In far northern areas, snow may persist longer before a brief rain-snow mix develops. Forecasters say precipitation may transition back to light snow Sunday night before tapering off early Monday.

Travel impacts are likely across the state, particularly in northern counties where colder temperatures will maintain snow-covered and slippery roads. Sidewalks may also become slick, and gusty winds on Monday could create additional challenges for drivers.

Forecasters highlight significant uncertainty in snowfall totals across Eastern Aroostook County, where small temperature differences could dramatically impact whether precipitation falls as rain or snow. Because of this, the National Weather Service has widened the expected snowfall range to account for shifting band placement and temperature fluctuations.

Northern communities such as Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, and Clayton Lake may see several inches of snow, while Bangor, Ellsworth, and coastal areas are more likely to experience rain with limited accumulation.

Conditions statewide are expected to improve by Monday night as the system exits and winds begin to ease.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, prepare for reduced visibility, and monitor updated forecasts as the storm evolves.
