Stuarts Draft, VA – A high-speed pursuit involving a 17-year-old driver caused major concern Thursday night after deputies say the juvenile allegedly fled a traffic stop while traveling more than 70 mph in a 45 mph zone along Stuarts Draft Highway.
According to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 8:10 p.m. on Thursday when a deputy attempted to stop a 2023 Hyundai sedan in the 3000 block of Stuarts Draft Highway. When emergency lights were activated, the driver allegedly accelerated and attempted to elude authorities.
Deputies reported that the pursuit continued across Draft Avenue, Hodge Street, Lake Road, and eventually back onto Howardsville Turnpike. The fleeing vehicle then left the roadway and traveled into a field off Patton Farm Road before coming to a stop near the intersection of Mt. Vernon Road and Stuarts Draft Highway.
The Sheriff’s Office says the driver was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile. In accordance with state law, the name of the teen will not be released. Numerous charges are currently pending as the investigation continues.
Deputies emphasized the dangers associated with fleeing law enforcement, noting that such actions place the juvenile, other motorists, nearby communities, and responding deputies at risk. Sheriff’s officials urged parents to remind teens that eluding police is a felony offense and carries significant legal and personal consequences.
Residents in the area reported seeing emergency activity Thursday evening as the pursuit moved across several roads in eastern Augusta County. No injuries were reported.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate and expects additional updates as charges are finalized.
