Augusta County, Virginia – A crash on Interstate 64 injured two people and prompted a search for a pickup truck Thursday morning.
According to Virginia State Police, the collision occurred around 9:33 a.m. near the 96-mile marker in Augusta County. An oversized load was traveling eastbound in the right lane at approximately 35 mph with pilot vehicles positioned in front and behind it.
Police said a white Subaru traveling in the left lane was allegedly cut off by a white pickup truck that abruptly changed lanes from the right lane into the left lane to avoid a pilot vehicle. The Subaru braked suddenly, lost control, and struck the rear passenger side of the oversized tractor-trailer.
The vehicle then crossed back into the right lane and into the median, striking an embankment before catching fire. Passersby assisted the driver and a juvenile passenger from the Subaru before it became fully engulfed in flames.
Both occupants were transported to UVA Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to state police.
Authorities said the pickup truck continued eastbound from the 96-mile marker and did not stop. The vehicle is described as a white pickup with a camper shell and orange reflective tape around the top of the shell. The driver was described as an adult white male with a beard.
Virginia State Police Division 1 Dispatch is asking anyone with information or dash camera footage to call #77 or 540-444-7784. The crash remains under investigation.
