Columbia, South Carolina – Scattered thunderstorms could bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and localized flash flooding across central South Carolina Tuesday afternoon and evening. With rain chances peaking above 70% in Columbia, Sumter, and Manning, drivers and residents should prepare for sudden downpours and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, clusters of thunderstorms will move through the entire Midlands region from mid-afternoon through tonight. A few storms may turn strong, packing frequent lightning and gusty winds, especially in Aiken, Newberry, and Camden. Rainfall rates could overwhelm drainage systems, causing minor flooding on roads, low-lying neighborhoods, and near rivers.

Communities like Augusta (72% chance of rain), Newberry (66%), and Orangeburg (68%) will see the highest threat window between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Expect delays on I-20, I-26, and US 1 during evening commutes. Emergency managers urge residents to stay weather-aware, avoid driving through flooded streets, secure outdoor items, and keep cell phones charged in case of power outages.

Thunderstorm threats should taper by late evening, but further advisories may be issued if heavy rain lingers. Stay tuned to local alerts for updates through Wednesday morning.
