Morristown, TN – Tennessee residents should prepare for an intense start to August, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown has issued both a Flash Flood Watch and a Heat Advisory for Thursday. The region is expected to experience locally heavy rainfall and sweltering heat, potentially leading to hazardous conditions.

According to the NWS, flash flooding is possible this afternoon and tonight, with a flood watch in effect through 5 a.m. EDT Friday. Rainfall rates could reach 2 to 3 inches per hour, particularly in areas prone to flooding. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded waters, with the NWS advising, “Turn around; don’t drown!”

Additionally, the heat index is forecasted to soar above 105°F across the southern and central Tennessee Valley. With temperatures expected to feel as high as 108°F, there is a significant risk of heat illness. The NWS advises everyone to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and avoid prolonged outdoor activities.

The 10-day forecast indicates that August will begin with an unsettled weather pattern. Thunderstorms remain a possibility on Friday with a high of 89°F, while Saturday could bring more rain and slightly cooler temperatures around 84°F. By Sunday, the weather is expected to stabilize, with sunny skies and a high of 87°F. Temperatures will continue to climb into the low 90s by early next week, before gradually returning to the mid-80s by Wednesday.
