Attu Station, Alaska – A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck remote waters in the western Aleutian Islands at 8:46 a.m. AKDT Sunday, occurring 229 kilometers southeast of Attu Station with no immediate reports of damage or disruption.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 35.0 kilometers, reducing the likelihood of strong surface shaking. The event was reviewed and confirmed by seismic monitors, with no tsunami threat issued for Alaska coastlines.

The earthquake was centered far offshore in a sparsely populated region of the Aleutians, limiting any direct impact to infrastructure. Communities across the western Aleutian chain, including Adak, are not expected to experience noticeable effects. No impacts to marine routes or air traffic have been reported.

Seismic activity is common along the Aleutian subduction zone, where the Pacific Plate moves beneath the North American Plate. Emergency officials advise residents across Alaska to remain prepared for sudden shaking by securing loose items and reviewing earthquake safety plans.

Monitoring will continue through the weekend, though no aftershocks or additional alerts have been issued.
