Baltimore Canyon – Mariners operating in the offshore waters of the Mid-Atlantic face rapidly deteriorating conditions as storm-force winds, dangerous seas, and heavy freezing spray develop from Friday into the weekend across the western North Atlantic.
According to the National Weather Service Ocean Prediction Center, Storm Warnings and Heavy Freezing Spray Warnings are in effect for waters from Hudson Canyon to Cape Charles Light, extending well beyond 20 nautical miles offshore. Conditions remain marginal Friday, but hazards escalate sharply Saturday as northwest winds increase to 40 to 50 knots, driving seas into the 10- to 17-foot range, with locally higher waves possible.
Areas south of Georges Bank, including the Baltimore Canyon region, will see a brief lull Friday night before winds rapidly intensify Saturday morning. Freezing spray remains a concern Friday, particularly during early operations, creating icing risks on decks, rigging, and superstructures. Seas continue to build through Saturday night, with storm-force gusts persisting into early Sunday before gradually easing.
These conditions pose a serious threat to commercial shipping, fishing vessels, and offshore operations. Mariners are urged to secure vessels, delay departures, and closely monitor updated marine warnings. The most hazardous period is expected Saturday through Saturday night, with elevated seas lingering into early next week as winds slowly diminish.
