Nassau, Bahamas – Hazardous marine conditions are building across the Bahamas as tropical storm warnings remain in effect, with the National Hurricane Center warning of seas climbing as high as 25 feet by Monday.
According to forecasters in Miami, powerful onshore winds combined with long-period swells will create extremely dangerous seas around the islands through early next week. Marine warnings cover the central and northern Bahamas, where winds of 40 to 50 knots are possible, driving waves to heights capable of overtopping seawalls and flooding vulnerable coastlines.
Boaters are urged to remain in port, as seas of 16 to 24 feet are expected Monday, particularly east of Nassau and along exposed Atlantic-facing shores. Ferry service between islands could be suspended, and low-lying docks and marinas may sustain damage from battering waves. By Tuesday, seas will remain rough at 9 to 14 feet before gradually subsiding midweek.
Officials caution that even experienced mariners should avoid travel until conditions improve, with rip currents and coastal inundation also threatening swimmers and beachgoers.
