Cape Fear, North Carolina – Boaters off the Carolina coast face rapidly worsening conditions by early Saturday as gale-force winds and towering seas build across offshore waters, creating dangerous conditions for any vessel beyond nearshore zones.

According to the National Weather Service marine forecast, a Gale Warning is in effect for waters from Cape Fear to 31°N, extending 250 nautical miles offshore. Conditions remain relatively manageable Thursday with southeast winds at 5 to 15 knots and seas between 4 and 6 feet, but a sharp shift begins late Friday into Saturday as a cold front moves through.

By Saturday morning, winds will shift north and increase to 25 to 35 knots, driving seas up to 8 to 13 feet. Conditions worsen further Saturday night into Sunday, with wave heights peaking between 10 and 14 feet and sustained winds remaining above 25 knots. These conditions could capsize smaller vessels and make navigation hazardous even for larger boats.

Mariners should avoid offshore travel beginning late Friday, secure vessels in port, and monitor updated advisories. The rough pattern continues through Sunday before gradually improving early next week as high pressure returns. Additional warnings may be issued as the cold front strengthens over the region
